Student Success is committed to student’s academic success from their first research paper to their first job interview. Located on the second floor of the library, the Student Success Center provides academic support and career counseling for all students.
Please contact us for all academic resources, questions/assistance with online needs, and clarifications on advising information/timelines.
Our Advising & Coaching Services assist and support students in selection of majors, life & career callings and academic success.
Services and resources offered to students include:

We also assist students who struggling at Midterms. Students meet with our academic advisors and together create a Midterm Plan of Action.

ASE provides support for students who demonstrate the need for remediation in basic academic skills as determined by standardized test scores. C-N ASE Program is overseen by Director, Joshua A. Bivens. Students who are required to take at least two ASE courses will be advised by the Student Success Center until satisfactory completion of the courses.
Writing and reading classes are designed to prepare students for writing compositions (essays) and to improve reading and study skills.
- Reading Skills (ASE 030*) is a 3 credit course offered in the Fall and Spring semesters. This course focuses on comprehension and vocabulary development, listening, note-taking, test-taking and time-management skills.
- Basic Writing Skills (ASE 031*) is a 3 credit course offered in the Fall and Spring semesters. This course focuses on reviews and development of grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and composition (essay) skills and mechanics.
Math courses are designed to prepare students for 100 level college math courses.
- Intermediate Algebra (ASE 034*) a 3 credit course offered in the Fall and Spring semesters. This course focuses on number system, basic operations and properties, equations and inequalities, quadratic equations, graphs, exponents and radicals, ratio, proportion, and variation.
- Intermediate Algebra II (ASE 070*) a 2 credit course offered in the Fall and Spring semesters. This course provides additional skill development in college algebra. This course is taken with Math-120ST.
A grade of at least a “C” is required to pass the ASE courses, and any failed ASE course must be repeated the next semester.
In addition, students in this program will be required to take ID 120, Academic Strategies. This two hour course is designed to reinforce study skills, time management skills, etc. Students in the ASE program must satisfy all of the academic requirements of the University (see Academic Standing in the catalog).
*Hours are not degree credit hours and cannot be used toward graduation requirements. However, academic skills enhancement credit hours and grades are used in determining athletic eligibility (first year only) and enrollment status for financial aid eligibility when required by the University to be taken.

Spring 2024 Peer Tutor Schedule
Our Peer Tutoring program is designed to help you understand difficult concepts and become confident with your knowledge, all in a relaxed setting. Our Peer Tutors are CRLA Level 1 certified, department recommended, and students just like you!
Peer Tutoring is a drop-in service offered Monday – Thursday from 4:45 – 9 p.m. in the Student Success Center — Room 217. Teams sessions may also be scheduled.
NEED HELP WHEN PEER TUTORING ISN’T AVAILABLE?
- Current C-N student have access to “Brainfuse”, an Online Tutoring Service. Brainfuse is accessible through Canvas.
- The C-N Library is offering numerous online resources and the service of live online chats with our research librarians.
- The Student Success Center is a one-stop-shop for Academic Resources to assist students for in-classroom and remote learning systems. Please check out the Academic Resources – Quick Links to utilize these tools and services.
The Writing Center
Library — 2nd floor, Rm 212 & 213
We offer free writing support to all Carson-Newman undergraduate writers, through all of the stages of the writing processes and for genres that range from academic essays to business resumes. We offer on-site, face-to-face, individual tutoring that is tailored to the writer’s goals. Our tutors are highly accomplished undergraduate students, trained by the English Department in writing center tutoring.
- No need to schedule an appointment! Just come to the Writing Center during our working hours, and a tutor will help you.
- You can meet with a tutor twice a week for 30 minute sessions. That means that you can have a total of one hour during a week, but the two half-hour sessions need to be on two different days of the week.
- Bring a copy of your paper (printed or on your computer), your assignment, any notes that you might have—including any questions that you might want to ask—and the email address of your teacher if you want us to send her/him a brief summary of your session. Your teacher will be notified of your appointment only if you ask ask us to do so. Otherwise, your Writing Center appointments are confidential.
- The tutor will help you improve any number of aspects of your paper, from your thesis, organization, and structure to citation style, punctuation, and spelling.

First Generation
Student Success is enhancing our First Generation program to support and celebrate our first generation students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Tri-Alpha — a First Generation National Honor Society — was officially awarded Chartership of the Delta Psi Chapter at Carson-Newman University on November 11, 2021. THE STORE is a Career Closet and Food Pantry for Carson-Newman University students in need of professional attire and/or facing food insecurities. The Career Closet, located in Baker Building Room 312, provides students access to professional and business casual attire for interviews, internships, and career fairs. The Food Pantry, located in Baker Building Room 310, provides non-perishable food items and personal care products for students needing additional support while attending C-N. All food and clothing items provides are NO COST to all current C-N students.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Donate Food and Clothing – We could not sustain this resource without the generosity of donors at C-N, our alumni, and the Lakeway community. We will always need donations of non-perishable food items, personal care products, and professional attire. Those who wish to donate to THE STORE may drop items off to the Student Success Center, located on the 2nd floor of the library. from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Feel free to call ahead (865-471-3567) or email (studentsuccess@3706a.com) if you would like to schedule a drive-by donation.
Donate time and talent – THE STORE relies on volunteer support from students, staff, and the community at large. Volunteers are needed in the Pantry and Closet to manage inventory, process donations and orders, maintain store space, and assist with customer needs.
Donate money – THE STORE shops periodically for necessary food and clothing items. Please consider making a financial contribution to support the needs of our students. Gifts can be made online (Under “Designation: Fund” dropdown, select “Acorns to Oaks: Other”. In “Specify gift designation”, type “The Store”) ; C-N faculty and staff may commit to THE STORE monthly giving program through the payroll deduction.

Speak with your academic advisor, return to class, and talk with the professor. Make sure to go to class every day after this.
You should discuss any change in your major/minor with your Academic Advisor and, if necessary, a counselor in Student Success. If you decide to change your major, then an advisor will discuss the appropriateness of the change based on your career goal. You will fill out a Change of Major form, get necessary signatures, and return to Student Success. Once the change is processed, you will be assigned an advisor in your new academic department.
